Dhigurah Diving – Best Dive Sites & Snorkeling Adventures

Introduction

Dhigurah Diving

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to float weightless under the ocean, surrounded by fish so colorful they look like they swam out of a cartoon? That’s what I got to live out when I went Dhigurah diving last month. I’d heard secrets about this tiny island in the Maldives being a hotspot for ocean junkies like me, and let me tell you, I don’t regret it.

Dhigurah Diving

Diving into the warm waters around Dhigurah felt like a world unknown to mankind. If you’re into scuba or even just Dhigurah snorkeling, this place is a must-hit. I’ve written my personal diving experience in Dhigurah and how you can jump into the fun too.

Dhigurah Diving - Why it's Special

So, diving Dhigurah: what’s the big deal? Well, it’s beyond than just about sticking your head underwater and hoping for the best. This island sits in South Ari Atoll, a spot famous for having some of the wildest ocean life around. I’m talking whale sharks you can swim with all year, manta rays that swoop in like underwater birds, and turtles that just chill while you goggle at them.

What makes it extra cool is how alive it all feels; like the ocean’s showing the secrets it holds just for you like the movie Frozen where Elsa unveils secrets of her origins. I’ve dived in a few places, but Dhigurah’s got this chill vibe, with crazy underwater happenings that’s hard to beat. If you’re a pro with a tank or just flapping around with a snorkel, or someone who’s a newbie; you’ll fit in just right.

Kudarah Thila

My first dive with Dhigurah divers was Kudarah Thila, a quick boat hop from the island. The reef’s alive with yellow snappers flashed past like a wall of gold, with sharks trailing behind. I swam through this narrow tunnel, feeling the current nudge me along, while soft corals waved hello.

It’s loud down there with fish everywhere, and I couldn’t stop staring at the colors. The Dhigurah diving center warned me about the pull, but I handled it fine.

Broken Rock

Next up, Broken Rock which I went diving Dhigurah style here, drifting through a canyon split wide open. Fan corals lined the walls, and I had to dodge them with my fins. A couple of sharks swam by, cool as anything, while eagle rays flapped overhead.

The overhangs were packed with tiny fish and soft corals popping in every shade. The current kept me moving, and I loved every second of it.

Kudhimaa Wreck

I checked out the Kudhimaa Wreck one afternoon: a sunken ship from ’98, sitting at 30 meters. Swimming into the cargo holds felt eerie, with batfish and puffers hanging out like it was protecting something.Lionfish flared their fins at me, and the hull was a mess of algae and sponges duking it out. It’s not deep or tricky, so I just floated around, admiring it all in with my Dhigurah diving gear.

Dhigurah Beyru

Dhigurah Beyru’s right off the island. I dove it with the Dhigurah diving center crew. The coral walls and gardens were full of life. Angelfish and butterflyfish swam circles around me, while a turtle paddled by, unbothered, though I expected some kind of reaction from the lazy little buddy.

A shark cut through the water later, and I could see forever, probably 20 meters easy. The current tugged a bit, but I kept my cool and just went with it.

Seventh Heaven

Seventh Heaven was a chill dive and I lived it! To keep up to its name it did feel like the seventh heaven! Soft corals everywhere, lighting up the pinnacle like a garden of Eden. I spotted whitetips gliding along and a turtle munching away, totally ignoring me.

The wrasse were all over, flashing their colors against the sandy floor. It’s easygoing, so I just floated, taking it slow. Perfect for kicking back after some wilder Dhigurah diving spots, my kind of underwater hangout.

Whale Shark Point (Fen Maa Dhigurah)

Whale shark diving in Dhigurah at Fen Maa Dhigurah was unreal. The boat dropped us where these massive whale sharks swim. Not so deep, shallow, maybe 15 meters max. One came right at me, huge and slow, while turtles and rays passed by like it was no big deal.

I tried Dhigurah snorkeling here too, just floating above, watching them glide. The Dhigurah divers knew exactly where to find them, they’re awesome they seem to me like underwater experts, knowing exactly where to anchor and where to jump.

Getting into Dhigurah

Take a Plane

Here’s how I got into it, and trust me, it’s easier than you think. First off, getting to Dhigurah is half the adventure. I flew into Malé, the Maldives’ main hub, and from there, you’ve got options. The domestic flight to the nearby atoll takes about 20 minutes and gives you a killer view of the islands below. Totally worth it if you’ve got the cash.

Ferry merrily or Speedboat into Dhigurah

But if you’re pinching pennies like I was, the public ferry’s your best bet. It’s dirt cheap, about USD 2, and takes a couple hours with a stop or two. Speedboats are faster taking around 90 minutes or so, but they’ll set you back more. I stuck with the ferry, sipped some water, and watched the waves roll by.

Dhigurah Diving Center

Once you’re on the island, signing up for a dive is a breeze. I hit up a Dhigurah diving center near my guesthouse, there are a couple solid ones, and they sorted me out quick. Most places, like the Dhigurah divers crew I rolled with, offer everything from beginner dives to full-on courses. I brought my own scuba gear, but they’ve got rentals if you’re traveling light.

Best Time to Dive

The best time to dive? April to May or August to October when the water’s calm and the visibility’s top-notch. November to December works too, but it’s busier and pricier.

Tips: Here's what I tell my friends:

A typical day starts early. Think around 7:00 AM and you’re on a boat with a small group. They cover your gear, a guide, and usually two dives. My favorite perk was free underwater photos they snapped of me with a whale shark which was a total keeper. If you’re new to this, don’t sweat it; they’ve got beginner-friendly sessions where you’re practically holding the instructor’s hand (in a good way). Book a morning slot. The water’s quieter, and you beat the afternoon boat rush. Oh, and slather on sunscreen because my shoulders learned that lesson the hard way.

Snorkeling

Dhigurah Snorkeling

For Dhigurah snorkeling, it’s even simpler. You can rent gear for cheap and swim out from the shore, but I’d say join a boat trip. They take you to the best spots, like where the whale sharks usually spotted and it’s way more fun.

  • How much is a snorkeling excursion in Dhigurah?I paid around $40 for a half-day trip, which included gear, snacks, and a guide who knew every fish by name. Worth every penny.
Dhigurah Snorkeling

Looking back, Dhigurah diving was hands-down the coolest thing I did on this trip. The ocean’s alive out there, and whether you’re tanked up or just snorkeling, it’s an experience that sticks with you. I’m still thinking about that whale shark eyeballing me like, “Hey, what’s up?”

If you’re headed to the Maldives, make this your big adventure, you won’t regret it. Ready to dive in? I highly recommend booking online which is more convenient to book your spot. Trust me, it’ll be the highlight of your trip.
